In this scenario, an individual might interact with others through chat platforms, claiming to have kidnapped someone and demanding ransom or other forms of extortion. They could use the #AI model to generate realistic and persuasive messages, imitating the behavior and communication style of a kidnapper, in an attempt to convince the victim of the legitimacy of the situation.

Virtual kidnapping typically involves creating a deceptive situation to extort money or other valuable assets from victims. In this context, AI could potentially be used to automate and enhance the deception by generating realistic voice recordings, deepfake videos, or other forms of manipulated content to make the fake kidnapping appear more convincing.

Perpetrators would use the AI-generated responses to simulate conversations with the victim, applying psychological manipulation techniques to create fear and urgency. They might employ tactics like threats, coercion, or emotional appeals.

Unfortunately, cybercriminals have also found ways to exploit them for ill gain. Recently, malicious actors have abused AI technology to accurately impersonate real people as part of their attacks and scams.

✅ Earlier this month, the FBI warned the public about how cybercriminals use deepfake technology to manipulate benign photos and videos in sextortion schemes, which have been lucrative for cybercriminals.

They might employ tactics like threats, coercion, or emotional appeals.

✅ As virtual kidnapping scams become more popular, the movement of traditional ransom techniques used in cybercrime, such as in ransomware attacks, will involve harder-to-block communication paths such as voice and video, and even new environments, such as the metaverse.
